Equity and Outreach (DEIA)
As a lab we value diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) and consider them in every aspect of the work we do. We believe that diverse and equitable contributions from all are essential in overcoming science’s greatest challenges and advancing society. We strive to cultivate an inclusive environment, welcoming diverse ideas and perspectives. We work as allies to dismantle systemic barriers, promoting equity and justice, while recognizing and amplifying all voices. Some of our ongoing work in this area include:
African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Disease (ACEGID)
Since 2008, we have been dedicated to training the next generation of African scientists in genomics of infectious disease. Our lab’s PI, Pardis Sabeti, developed a research program across Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Senegal, fostering partnerships with local scientists supporting frontline healthcare workers. In 2013, in collaboration with Christian Happi of Redeemer’s University, we established the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Disease (ACEGID). ACEGID’s mission is to provide comprehensive training and capacity building programs, empowering African researchers and educators to conduct viral genomic research and surveillance, ultimately combating infectious disease. Over its first decade, ACEGID has trained over 1500 researchers and healthcare professionals, shaping the future of African genomic science.
Sentinel
In 2020, in collaboration with ACEGID, we created the Sentinel program aiming to expand West and Central Africa’s capacity to spontaneously detect, rapidly respond to, and develop counter-measures to endemic and epidemic diseases. One of Sentinel’s main goals is to empower the entire public health system by partnering with regional public health institutions to expand the reach and scope of the tools developed through our work. Today, Sentinel has established sites in hospitals across Nigeria and Sierra Leone, and has laid the groundwork for more in Senegal and Liberia.
Operation Outbreak
In 2015 our PI co-founded Operation Outbreak (OO) alongside Todd Brown and Andres Colubri. OO is a STEM-focused educational platform designed for inclusivity across educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, with a special focus on underrepresented minorities and lower-income students. Throughout the US, OO continues to engage and empower diverse student populations in the realm of outbreak prevention and preparedness.
